Teach English In Taiwan
There are many ways people experience foreign cultures. Usually they do so by taking a vacation in another country, or simply by reading about it in a book or watching a movie. But the only real way to truly understand what a foreign land and its people are all about is to live there and get to know these people on a personal level. This is why teaching English in Taiwan is such a great opportunity.
Taiwan has many language schools and kindergartens that offer teaching vacancies for part-time or full-time English teachers. AAC offers English teaching positions throughout Taiwan. We require our teachers to hold a Bachelors Degree (in any discipline ok), a TEFL certificate and be a native English speaker from either Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK, Canada, South Africa or Ireland.
Income levels vary between positions and qualifications of teachers. Part-time positions often pay by the hour, and this can typically be NT$500-600 per hour. However travelling between different schools can be time consuming and tiring.
Full-time salaries are usually calculated on a monthly basis. A typical full-time position at a
kindergarten could last from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and pay NT$50,000 to NT$60,000 per
month. This is very good when compared to the living costs in Taiwan. Note that Taiwanese graduates
receive an average NT$25,000 to NT$30,000 per month.

We only work with schools which are legally registered to hire foreign teachers and can arrange for you to have a resident visa and work permit. This could involve signing a 1 year contract with the school and paying 20% tax on your salary for the first 6 months.
Other schools do not register their teachers, so there is no need to sign a contract or pay tax, however you would not have a work permit and therefore you would be accepting this sort of work at your own risk.
Taxes
The tax year in Taiwan follows the calendar year. There are essentially 2 categories of taxes for English teachers in Taiwan. Depending upon the number of days you have been in Taiwan, will determine the amount of tax you pay.
- Category A : 0 ~ 183 days - You must pay 20% tax on your income. No deductions can be claimed.
- Category B : 184 days or more - You will be taxed according to the following progressive scale.

If you fall into Category B you can also claim a NT$72,000 exemption for each taxpayer, spouse and dependent in your family. There is also a standard NT$43,000 deduction for each individual or a NT$65,000 deduction for each married couple.
Your status in Category B will carry over to the next tax year even if you don't stay in the country 183 days the following year.
Generally speaking, the tax situation is excellent when teaching English in Taiwan!
Contracts
Many local schools will contact us when they are looking for foreign English teachers, so this means that we will be able to help you find a suitable job. Our staff will negotiate with potential schools for better terms, salary and benefits on behalf of each teacher prior to assigning them to the schools. Our full-time positions consist of no more than 120 teaching hours per month.
Most schools prefer 1 year contracts. If you intend going the work permit way then the minimum contract period the school will require is 1 year. If you are unable to stay for 1 year then please inform us upon application as there are possibilities of getting 3 and 6 month contracts with the help of AAC. 3 month contracts are available between June and September because this is the summer vacation period and additional teachers are required by many schools.
The benefits applying for 1 year contracts cannot be expected as those for teachers who have agreed to 3 ~ 6 month contracts. Such benefits are salary / wage increases, paid public holidays, health insurance etc. All of our 1 year teaching contracts offer bonuses, subsidised health care (70% ~ 80% of premium paid by the school), airport pickup and an airfare allowance. Depending on the school, you may also be lucky enough to get free accommodation or an accommodation subsidy.
